Totally off-topic, but totally cute!

posted in Personal, Rachel |

So, I mentioned in yesterday’s post that we were going to start fostering rabbits soon.  I joined a few local organizations that takes in rabbits and picked up my first foster from the county shelter today — a black and white speckled mini-lop I named Stella… and her three babies!  Stella and her mate were surrendered to the shelter last week and shelter workers were quite surprised to see three little balls of fuzz born on Monday, which may have had something to do with why she was surrendered to begin with.   Two of the babies are white with  black-ringed eyes and spots and one is a rich chestnut color; all are as big as a hamster.   I’m trying to think of names for them, but since we won’t be able to determine their genders for another two months or so, they have to be gender-neutral names.  I also have a peculiarity in that I have to give my pets proper names (side note: I got my first bunny at about age 11 and named him Snuggles.  I  always suspected this to be the reason for his cranky disposition).  Any suggestions?

Tian Tian (pronounced Tien Tien) – it’s a Chinese name that means “every day add a little”
Babe – as in the movie :)
    Fern
    Erin/Aaron
Kelly (yes, I know a man named Kelly)
    Ping Ping (“peace” in Chinese)
That’s all I’ve got. Boy are gender-neutral names hard! But the bunnies are adorable :)

Well, the brown one reminds me of coffee, so Joe or Jo depending on the eventual gender determination (one doubts the rabbit will get the subtlety of homonyms).

One of the white ones should be Chris, just because it’s a nice name and they’re nice bunnies.

And the other white one has to be named Easter. ‘Tis the season after all.

Awww! Cuteness! I love bunnies. As for names

    From Beatrix Potter:
    Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail

    From a Midsummer Night’s Dream:
    Cobweb, Mustardseed, Peaseblossom, and/or Moth

From the Lord of the Rings Trilogy:
Merry, Pippin, Samwise (Sam for short) and/or Frodo

Yes, I’m a lit dweeb and sorry, two of those came in sets of four and not three.

Haha, if the genders fit, I was thinking of Ron, Hermione and Jenny (my brown bunny’s name is Harry), so if you’re a dweeb, you’re in good company :)

I think Rocky, Road, and Peanut. ^w^ I think those would be cute names.

RachelB’s names are SUPER cute too. Seeing as there are the twins and the little chocolate-colored one.

    How About

    Stevie
    Bugs (as in Bunny)

Ok not so good Rabbit Names. I am sure the rabbits won’t mind being called Sue if they are Sam.

If it was good enough for Johnny Cash….

Baby bunnies are very spasmodic and you have to be careful because they jerk and jump (which is why some people call them popcorn). So, Brandon suggested naming them Snap, Crackle and Pop for now until we think of their real names. @Petty: I thought of Clover, too, for the brown bunny. And maybe Basil and Dahlia for the other two.

Here’s an updated photo from this afternoon. They’re getting to be fat roly polies!

i’m a semi-frequent reader, and a house rabbit owner, this post delights me! i got my rabbit from the local animal shelter and it has never even occurred to me that i could foster rabbits in the future (my current living situation does not lend itself to fostering). thanks for the idea!

how about “nutmeg” for the little brown guy/gal? or “whiskey”?

    SO. CUTE.

Awww, Nutmeg is a cute name. The bunnies finally opened their eyes yesterday!

They are darling! I hope to see a few more pictures in the future.

How about – Nutmeg (brown), Sugar (lighter accented white) & Spice (Darker accented white)

I also thought of bunilla but that’s too punny…

Thank you for being a foster mom! I hope to one day be able to do this as well. So rewarding and you get even more love and cuteness in your life – what’s not to like?!
