Bought and sold

It’s Friday (!) and in case the mid-afternoon slump strikes, here’s a couple videos to slack off to.

A new PBS documentary follows four girls as they grapple with body image issues, unhealthy and confusing media images and the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.  “A Girl’s Life” is hosted by Rachel Simmons, the author of the New York Times bestsellers Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls, and The Curse of the Good Girl: Raising Authentic Girls with Courage and Confidence.  An educator and coach, Rachel also blogs about dating, relationships and other issues at TeenVogue. Click here for more info on the project.

That documentary looks terrific. I am a college undergrad who still ‘gets hive’ when recalling those awful middle school years. I hope these girls grow to have a lot more self-esteem than I did! Cant wait to view.

Thanks for the clips. I hope I get to see the documentary on girls. Though I’m 53, I still remember being 15 as if it were yesterday. And Sarah Haskins–brilliant doesn’t go far enough in describing her!

UGH! Middle school (jr. high in my day) and high school were THE. WORST. I hope to catch that documentary.

I’d like to see the documentary, but one odd thing struck me: all of the girls have really, really clear skin. There’s a diversity of ethnicities (yay!) and body types (yay!) but I didn’t see a single blemish… probably hidden with make-up, but this is something I’ve been thinking about or awhile now. I don’t know about you, but when I was 12-18 years old, me and my friends certainly didn’t have skin that clear.

It’s a wonderful thing Simmons is doing! No one here really looks at what girls are facing. Well, how can they with poverty staring us in the face.

Thanks for posting those. I always get pumped up after watching things like that. It gives me inspiration to kick negative images in the butt.
