Rollergirls work up an appetite on Food Network
posted in Body-Affirming, Feminist Topics, Food Culture, Pop Culture |
From the Food Network comes two uplifting shows about women eating and enjoying food — and lots of it.
- At 10 p.m. EST today, the South Jersey Derby Girls star in the season premiere of “Dinner Impossible,” in which chef Robert Irvine has eight hours to “prepare a meal tough enough to meet the standards of 250 roller derby women.” As NJ.com reports, the South Jersey team members also doubled as sous chefs in helping Irvine cook up a meal to feed players and fans gathered at the Colossal Coastal Roller Derby Convention they hosted last May. The menu will be revealed in tonight’s episode.
- Coming up Aug. 23 is the series premiere of “What Would Brian Boitano Make?” featuring the Olympic gold medalist figure skater and sometimes “South Park” caricature. Boitano kicks off his new show by inviting the San Francisco Bay Area Derby Girls for a dinner party where he knocks back a few bacon martinis with the team. Bacon booze? Seriously?! According to the episode description: “All of Brian’s simple and succulent recipes are created with the ladies’ favorite ingredient – bacon! Menu includes: Spicy Fried Chicken Bites with Derby Dip (bacon blue cheese dip), Bacon Corn Muffins with Savory Cream Cheese Frosting, Bacon Cups with Sweet Potato Hash and Bourbon Bacon Apple Tarts.” NBC Bay Area has the scoop on the bacon bonanza.
If you’ve ever seen a rollergirls bout in action, you’d know that these hard-hitting women on wheels are no dainty flowers for whom a simple plate of lettuce and air suffice. It’s nice to see not only the roller girls get some national recognition, but also women being shown on television eating hearty portions of food in a non-pathological way — even if it is bacon martinis.
