Rollergirls work up an appetite on Food Network

From the Food Network comes two uplifting shows about women eating and enjoying food — and lots of it.

  • At 10 p.m. EST today, the South Jersey Derby Girls star in the season premiere of “Dinner Impossible,” in which chef Robert Irvine has eight hours to “prepare a meal tough enough to meet the standards of 250 roller derby women.”  As NJ.com reports, the South Jersey team members also doubled as sous chefs in helping Irvine cook up a meal to feed players and fans gathered at the Colossal Coastal Roller Derby Convention they hosted last May.  The menu will be revealed in tonight’s episode.
  • Coming up Aug. 23 is the series premiere of “What Would Brian Boitano Make?” featuring the Olympic gold medalist figure skater and sometimes “South Park” caricature.  Boitano kicks off his new show by inviting the San Francisco Bay Area Derby Girls for a dinner party where he knocks back a few bacon martinis with the team.  Bacon booze?  Seriously?!  According to the episode description: “All of Brian’s simple and succulent recipes are created with the ladies’ favorite ingredient – bacon! Menu includes: Spicy Fried Chicken Bites with Derby Dip (bacon blue cheese dip), Bacon Corn Muffins with Savory Cream Cheese Frosting, Bacon Cups with Sweet Potato Hash and Bourbon Bacon Apple Tarts.”  NBC Bay Area has the scoop on the bacon bonanza.

If you’ve ever seen a rollergirls bout in action, you’d know that these hard-hitting women on wheels are no dainty flowers for whom a simple plate of lettuce and air suffice.  It’s nice to see not only the roller girls get some national recognition, but also women being shown on television eating hearty portions of food in a non-pathological way — even if it is bacon martinis.

Speaking of bacon, I’m dying to try this recipe, but I haven’t yet:

I want to be a roller girl so badly! But I’m doing a year of service with Americorps (= wages below poverty line) and my car just broke down, so it does not seem to be in the cards for me. :(

I might see if I volunteer with my local team in some other capacity though.

Colleen… your local roller derby league (if it’s anything like mine) is in DIRE need of volunteers! Especially non-skating officials… like penalty trackers, and score keepers, etc.

Of course – once you see them all out there skating, you really won’t be able to resist. Skates and pads don’t HAVE to be expensive.

(I will warn you, though, you do develop a dangerous habit of buying “just a few more derby outfits”)

    ROLLER DERBY ROCKS!!!

    Heya Rachel!
Thanks fer the mention on your blog.

The Brian Boitano Show was a blast, we were stoked to do it, because it did show all of us, eating what we wanted without worry. Mmmmmm…bacon.

Every derby girl I know is all about promoting healthy images of women in sports.

One of the many amazing aspects of roller derby is how it brings together women of all shapes and sizes. It doesn’t matter what size you are, as long as you can skate and if you don’t know how, we recognize those who push themselves and put in the effort and challenge themselves in a way that no other sport can.

Thanks again and hope to see you at a bout sometime!

    Enstephalitis, Bay Area Derby Girls
