Win it: “disFIGURED”

Today is my first day of a weeklong furcation (this is what we journalists are calling our furloughs so as to ease the reality of a week off with no pay) and after Wednesday’s post about the trainwreck that is MeMe Roth, I feel the compelling need to light some virtual incense and salt the blog’s doors and windowsills.  And what better way to clear the air than with a giveaway!  Director Glenn Gers was kind enough to send me a copy of his new film disFigured after it came out.  He had previously sent me an advance review copy, so I’m offering the new still-shrinkwrapped copy to one lucky reader here.  You can read my review of disFIGURED here and an interview with Gers here.  Men-in-Full also has a great review here.

Interested?  Leave a comment to this post letting me know you’d like to win by midnight (EST) Sunday, May 31. The winner will be picked randomly and announced on Monday.  He/she must reside in the U.S. or Canada for free shipping — international folks can enter, but I’m asking that you subsidize shipping costs beyond what I would pay to ship to Canada — and needs to provide a mailing address by email.   Good luck!

I decided to order it on Amazon.com. I only am mentioning this, cause I’d advise against ordering from them if you are triggered by Anorexia stuff. Like they suggest other books and material about having Anorexia.

  8. 8 On May 29th, 2009, Rachel said:

Thanks for the warning, Jackie. I should probably mention that this film may be triggering for some people. In the film, Lydia asks Darcy for “anorexia lessons” and Darcy reluctantly obliges, knowing that you can’t “teach” someone to be mentally ill. Nonetheless, she gives Lydia some advice on how to be a miserable shell of a person with anorexia. Most people would find these “tips” unhealthy and abhorrent, but those still actively struggling with an eating disorder might find it triggering. Just a warning, folks.

I’m not entering the contest because I already own a copy, I just wanted to issue a disclaimer that some parts of the movie were pretty triggering for me. I am absolutely aware of the fact that “triggers” are a product of an individuals person’s state of mind, not necessarily anything specific in a book/movie/etc, but I did just want to mention that in case anyone is in a tricky spot right now and might benefit from holding off on watching it.

That being said, it IS a smart movie with some excellent insights. I loaned it to my psychologist with notes on some specific scenes that especially hit home for me (I believe the conversation about 50 minutes in was on, maybe another 1:20 in, I’ll have to double check, it was many months ago).

I would love to own it.

This is the movie that really got me interested in FA (paradoxically, considering the controversial ‘meeting’ scenes). It wasn’t those scenes. It was (SPOILER) when Lydia asked Darcy “What do you think of my body?” and Darcy replied “I think it’s disgusting.” And Lydia’s facial expression. I realized right then, that WAS what I thought about my body, and some of my friends’ bodies. And how ugly that attitude was. Now that I’ve been paying attention and reading, it’s so easy to see how much the definition of “acceptable body” is an externally-imposed construct, benefitting nobody but purveyors of various products/services. Anyhow, that movie was my epiphany, and I’d love a copy. Cool givaway, Rachel!

@Vixen: It’s interesting that this film is what got you into FA. There were some in the fat acceptance community who boycotted it mostly for the representations of the fat acceptance group (which I agree were unrealistic) but also because Lydia is portrayed as having unspoken binge eating disorder. While I would love for a movie to feature a smart, confident fat woman who doesn’t have an eating disorder (or the focus is not on her eating at all), I also recognize that there are lots of people with binge eating disorder and because of the nature of the disorder, many tend to be fat. Sweeping them under the fat acceptance rug isn’t constructive for either the movement or eating disorder awareness.
