Miss America Kirsten Haglund on eating disorder awareness

The reigning Miss America 2008 Kirsten Haglund appeared last week on CNN’s American Morning to discuss her platform of eating disorder awareness.  Haglund’s reign is soon coming to an end, but she’s continuing her activism with The Kirsten Haglund Foundation to raise awareness of eating disorders and provide scholarships for those seeking treatment.

I used to be a little suspicious when a model or actress or some other beautiful, thin person stands up against eating disorders, because then not only are they thin and flawless, they do it effortlessly and without going crazy!! And which Miss America has EVER been outside of a very narrow weight range?

But Kirsten does sound genuine and very knowledgeable about the issue, and her foundation/scholarship will probably provide hope and access to treatment for many. I’m glad she’s tackling this issue.

Yeah, I do think it a little hypocritical for any Miss America to talk about the importance off judging a woman on her merits when the only reason she has a national platform is because she competed in a competition that largely judged her on the basis of how she looks. But I wish Haglund well and hope that her foundation is able to help people in need.

Anyone else noticed that they wrapped up that whole discussion with the host telling Kirsten that she ‘looks great’?

I am really impressed by Kristen, she is a very bright an articulate young woman. I really respect her for speaking out and raising awareness about eating disorders.

Claire — I noticed that too, but I think it was more in the context of “You look healthy” since Kirsten suffered from anorexia as a teenager.

While I applaud her for bringing eating disorders into the national spotlight, I do find it a bit ironic that it is only through a beauty pageant that this bright, articulate young woman can find a platform. Also, they mention that her reign is over, so why didn’t we hear about this DURING her reign?

Alysa — Kirsten has been quite vocal about eating disorder awareness all throughout her reign. I’ve written about her at least once before on this site.

@ Claire – I noticed that too. I was annoyed by that. Do you think she would of not told her she looked great if she weighed more or less?

@Rachel – Yes I agree that it does sound like it is in the context her being healthy. But still I think it is weird because women’s bodies are always under the microscope.

I hope she can help those who truly needed it. As someone who suffered with an eating disorder for 6 years I never had the money to go to a treatment center because of being economically impoverished. There are a lot of class issues around treatment. I hope she can help people who really can’t afford it.

Miss America, Kirsten Haglund, is definitely using her celebrity status for good! We were recently able to interview Kirsten about her own personal battle with eating disorders and how she is using her platform of eating disorder awareness to help others.
