Vice-presidential debate or Republican roast? Viewers tune in

posted in Politics |

Millions of viewers are expected to tune in to tonight’s vice-presidential debate between Republican hopeful Sarah Palin and her Democratic opponent Joe Biden. And not since Dan Quayle have expectations been so low for a vice-presidential candidate as they are for the often rambling and incoherent Alaska governor.

By now most of the country has seen or at least heard of the often-aired segments from her 40-minute session with Katie Couric, in which Palin defended her puzzling claim that geographic proximity makes her some sort of expert on Russia; went blank when queried about McCain’s achievements as a big-business regulator; agreed America “may find itself” on the road to another Great Depression; when asked which newspapers she reads, replied “All of them;” proved unable to name a Supreme Court decision other than Roe v. Wade; and, promoting a troop surge in Afghanistan, casually suggested that it “will lead us to victory there, as it has proven to have done in Iraq.”

Whenever I listen to the former Miss Wasilla fumble to answer legitimate questions with the few talking points she’s been instructed to parrot (He’s a maverick! It’s all about change! I fought the good ole’ boy network! I’m a working-class mom just like you!), I can’t help but think of another beauty queen: 2007 Miss Teen USA contender Lauren Caitlin Upton (Miss South Carolina).

With even dyed-in-the-red-wool conservatives now questioning the folly of voting Jane Six-Pack a mere heartbeat away from the American presidency, the simple act of constructing a coherent sentence should put her over the top. Even Upton finished third runner-up in the national pageant. Yes, she’s also very pretty.

Oh…I can hardly stand watching that video. It just makes makes me cringe. The depth of her vapidness is excruciating.

    And yet, the perfect comparison.

The slowing unveiling of the interview material has made the words “such as” echo in my ears as well. It is fun to tag that on to the end of all her answers.

And then you remember–she could very easily become our President.

    Send help, please.

I so appreciate your way of putting things…posts like these keep me coming back to this blog over and over again.

Little Hard on her! She’s stressed by the Press, Travel and all the info having to swallow. Now I am not voting McCain, but she’s perfect VP.

What requirements does the job have? Be alive, breathing, USA Citizen.

She’s no Hillary, but a smart move by McCain. Now if he can keep her from Speaking to the Press…

SteveD, I don’t think this was harsh in the slightest. Anyone running for a political office, especially the second highest elected position in the United States, should be able to answer difficult questions and do more than spout empty rhetoric. The job of VP does (or at least should) involve more than being a warm body while playing at being Caribou Barbie. It will be stressful, involving travel, speaking to the press, and assimilating large amounts of information. If Palin can’t handle it now, when it’s just the election at stake, how would she manage if it were a real crisis?

    VP job is

    President of the Senate
    Spare Tire for POTUS
Do what POTUS says, ie go to places and shake hands and be the USA for the POTUS
    Not make headlines

Ie. Stay in the “Secret Undisclosed Location”

She’s perfect choice for McCain. Get the Female Vote and be the “Spare Tire” for the POTUS.

The POTUS has plenty of advisers and people to help. No one is qualified for the position from the start. All OJT. Hummm…..New college course in the future. How to be POTUS.

Best shape the country’s budget has ever been in was when Clinton was POTUS. He could not get anything done in Congress. Not his party in charge in Congress. So the budget did not BLOW up like under Bush. Ie Nothing happened.

I hope whoever is our new leader they will hear the People and do what they want. Like what the House did on the Bailout Vote. I hope they do not pass it. Let Wallstreet suffer and fix the problems. Ie make it possible for people to get house loans and car loans and credit for small business and such. Trickle Up instead of Down. Anyone making 10 Million a year like on Wall St I can’t feel for.

Should be Fun Nov 4 this year.

One last thing. McCain thinks he knows about military and how to run it. Palin knows she does not. Which one will lisen to advisers…..Of course the counter to that is Cuban Missile Crisis. USAF Wanted to Nuke Russia.

You have low expectations, Steve. But I’m not surprised, given the abysmal American presidency’s we’ve been forced to endure these past eight years. Bush and Co. Inc. has sure dumbed down of the American presidency to the point where we’d be happy with someone who can just pronounce nuclear correctly.

Your right, it’s very low. McCain is too old and Obama need experience. Flip a coin those 2 are the major choices.

I still can’t understand why Hillary is not on Obama ticket? I bet she turned it down. Should come out after election. I bet she’s POTUS after Obama.

I am lifetime Republican. Shame they have not figured it out for years and years.

I will say I am better off than I was 8 years ago. I make double the money or more. My benefits have gone up (Retired Disabled Vet). Still I did not vote for him and have hope for the future.

I still think Palin will be good VP. Good as our “Potato” speller guy. Quale if I remember. I will be voting soon (Middle of Oct, WA has vote by mail 100%).

Strange part is I have talked to people who do not like Bush and will vote for McCain because he’s “Black”. Also some Black people won’t vote for him because he’s not Black. And some who believe he’s Muslim (true).

I was raised in the South but I guess 20+ years in the Military (USAF) changed me a little. Strange part is my Dad would never screw over Black Person in business. Saw him give little old lady big break (on leave) when her Refridger was just unplugged. No charge. When he could have ripped her off or charged her for service call. We did plug it in and make sure everything worked.

he would vote for a Women he said.

    Strange wonderful World.
