Help create a virtual ED/FA/SA library!

Over at The-F-Word messageboard, we’ve started threads compiling notable, influential and otherwise good reads in several different categories. Know of any great books or articles for the categories below? Please post the citation information in its respective thread so we can begin building our virtual library of resources!

Have an idea for a different category not listed above? Don’t hesitate to start a new thread! (And you can always discuss books of other genres that aren’t related to the site’s themes of food, fat, feminism or eating disorders.)

Don’t have an account yet, but Life Without Ed by Jenni Schaefer is one of my favorite books. It’s a self-help book — definitely a MUST for the self-help list. I actually had the good fortune of meeting her and getting my picture taken with her! :-)

I might suggest young adult books for a category.

Haven’t signed on to an account yet (will soon) — but here’s a uni professor (Social Work) currently doing research concerning teen eating disorders and family influence (or something like that). Haven’t had a chance to investigate thoroughly yet (may be some publications out there), but sounded interesting when I ran across it …..

    “Research and Practice Interests:

Professor Liechty’s primary research interests are aimed at understanding the interplay between family processes and psychosocial dimensions of health and well-being, disability and chronic illness, and gender and health. Of particular interest is how family processes influence healthy and disordered eating and food behaviors, weight regulation concerns, perceptions of normal weight, the construction of body image, and resistance against hegemonic and/or unsound media ideals for body shape and appearance.”

    “Current Research:

Professor Liechty’s current research projects include: 1) Examination of the roles of gender socialization and family processes in hypothesized pathways of risk and resilience against body image distortion, disordered eating, overweight, and extreme dieting among adolescents, and how these differ by race/ethnicity, age, gender, and SES. She is currently using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) to pursue this line of inquiry. 2) Investigating socialization factors, models, and pedagogies that facilitate the development of Cultural Competency among health and human service providers, students, educators, and families…”
