YOU RULE! I caught you on the morning show and it was so refreshing to hear your perspective. Thanks for being brave and telling your story and putting ignorant perspectives to shame. Not everyone is 100 pounds. People of all bodies and shapes and sizes need to be accepted for who they are.

Rachel–I thought you and Monique were awesome. Well-spoken and you had your facts together. What was the point of having MeMeMeMeMe there? And the doctor? “Don’t eat white foods.”??? The segment was laced with typical morning show silliness (”we’re going to see what their husbands think”–which has to do with health what? But thanks for proving the point that when people say health they mean attractiveness) But I thought you were both great. And I loved the photo of you with your husband in anti-Bush t-shirts. Yay!

Well after leaving the tv on all night, I woke up and immediately started getting ready to go to the gym. Not because I want to lose weight, but because having so many recent bad things happening in my life, I figured the two things I could control where working out and eating healthy. Thus I was able to watch you this morning here in ATLanta. I thought you and Monique did an amazing job. You were educated, elegant and stayed focus on getting your points across. I look forward to checking out the site and sharing it with many of my friends.

    Congratulations -

JC in ATL - Male, 20’s, 169 lbs and not living healthy.

P.S. Rachel - your hair is OUTSTANDING!

You guys did great, “it’s about fitness not fatness.” Love it. Because you and monique have joined a movement like this, the physician on the panel was unable to be extreme. Obviously the lady “against obesity,” has not a clue what weight issues are all about. I couldn’t have done a better job of expressing how we “of size” feel about the medical establishment and its lack of vision for our health and well being. Kudos to you!!!

I just saw you on the show and I must say that you are an inspiration to this big girl. I too am healthy and am tired of the stigma that big ppl (not just women) live with. My only health issue is back problems and some might think that it is caused by weight, However there are Marathon runners with my condition

Good job on The Morning Show. I just wanted to let everyone know that I think it’s bologna about the one woman stating for us not to eat white products! I am tired of hearing that because it’s so not true! I am Italian and when it comes to pasta, it’s white, not wheat. It is not unhealthy to eat white flour products and if it was, then the world would have been so called unhealthy way back in day. It’s called eating in moderation, not cutting out foods all together. I just had to stress my point!

I am so glad that you ladies talked about fitness vs fatness! Fit individuals whether fat (by BMI or other standards) is really what we should be talking about. The issue in our country isn’t obesity, it is lack of activity! Get active and you can stay fit, whether you are a size 2 or 14! A great resource and a great book on this subject is written by Sally Edwards called Fit and Fat- http://www.heartzones.com

Amazing! I saw your segment on the Morning Show and I am SO PROUD of you and Monique. I am so tired of feeling like I’m healthy and fit, but having people tell me that I need to “do something about my weight”. I’m 5′4″ and I weigh around 175 and it’s fine with me! I used to have a terrible body image, but I started saying this little mantra when I look in the mirror…”You’re hot”! Now when I look in the mirror I rarely see the “flab” anymore. I love your blog, I love this movement you’ve started, and I think we should all love our bodies! Bravo!

Great job! I only wish one of you had had the opportunity to refute the validity of BMI as a measure of health or fitness. Still glad that you were able to make the point about the arbitrary lowering of BMI standards in ‘98. The doctor made some comment about health risks being the reason.

You’re both heroes and looked radiant on the show.

You guys did wonderful. Especially with the cards stacked against you — this is a sampling of the mandjshow.com’s “Health” category of the show — surprise, surprise, it focuses mostly on dieting.

    http://www.mandjshow.com/category/videos/health/

“Celebrity Mom Secrets” (to losing baby weight)
“The Master Cleanse Diet” (”Find out what happens to your body after ten days without eating, and whether this miracle potion is a dieter’s salvation … or just plain starvation.” - Oh no, I think they sit around horking Twinkie-flavored donut pie all day.)

“The Hallelujah Diet” (Zzzzah? Jesus-sanctioned dieting?)

“How Not to Stress” (Nope, this one’s about dieting, too. We want to make sure the stress doesn’t derail you from your Life-Changing New Year’s Diet Permanently Skinny Forever Now Men Love Me and Momma Thinks I’m Pretty).

    and so it goes… :p

I just saw your interview on the Morning Show. I can’t believe what I just heard. I recently lost 32 pounds (from September 1st) and have been under a doctor’s care since I lost the weight. I am severely anemic, depressed, abnormal menstrual periods and have had two colds. I never thought I could be starving myself to death! I am 49 years old, 5′5 and weigh 149 lbs. I weigh myself no less than five times a day. I didn’t realize I had an eating disorder. I am going to get help! Thank you!

Both of you were fabulous and Mimi was thankfully pretty quiet. Although the male host did bug me a bit, he was incredulous that a woman can be fat, fit and have a husband, oh well. Other than that, it was wonderful!

  37. 37 On January 28th, 2008, LindsayNo Gravatar said:

You and Monique are SO beautiful! I didn’t know what you looked like before this, and you ladies are slammin :) Rock the casbah!

But…I have to come clean…I’m not a person of size. I constantly am bombarded with comments about my weight as well though, but I am only about 145 and 5′3.

I did, however, once subscribe to a diet where I restricted myself to 1600 calories a day, then pushed it to 1400, then 1300 and i realized I had a problem. I never got anorexic, but I think I was damn close to that edge, and that’s a scary thought. And then, like a friggin Godsend, I found Kate Harding’s blog, and through that I found Harriet Brown’s and then yours and it was like…breaking through a door that had been sealed for 22 years. It has been so wonderful to realize through your positivity (I hope that’s a word…if not, someone call Webster) that it’s ok for me to love my body.

I look at the world a different way now, and I look at myself differently and my friends and family. So thank you. I consider myself a “shapeling” as Kate Harding puts it and I 100% support FA and HAES and I really hope that it’s ok that someone of my size is a frequent reader and avid supporter.

    Rock on Ladies :)

I am new to this whole “body/fat acceptance” thing and still struggle with accepting myself. I saw you on the show and thought - she looks fabulous, I wish I looked like that.

Then you gave your height and your weight. We’re height/weight twins!

Boy was that a wake up call.

Great, great job. Thanks so much.

^Hon, I have a friend of *small* size — very thin — who I’ve been advocating for a while. She has horror stories about friends who’ve tried to gain weight and have landed in the hospital, and constantly feels pressure by family and doctors to put on weight.

However, she’s really just small! She has absolutely no eating issues. She doesn’t restrict—she’s just got the metabolism of Sea Biscuit ;)

I think size acceptance goes both (all) ways. Big me, little her, medium someone else, etc.

I wonder if that extends to animals as well. We should take a page from their book. I have two fat kittehs and a thin kitteh and F.K.’s are WAY snugglier and lovey than Thin Kitteh is. Thin Kitteh is a beetch.

I know part of the whole point is that we’re all individuals, and we (fat people, women, adjective-of-your-choice people) shouldn’t be stereotyped or judged together (or judged at all), but in any instance where someone has to be a representative of a certain group, it’s hard to look at it that way. Obviously, you don’t speak for all fat women anymore than the Dr. speaks for all of medicine. With all that said, I think you both did a great job of using your personal stories, facts, and opinions while also speaking to the concerns of the (pun intended) masses, as well. Basically, you both rocked and I was proud to say “yeah, I’m one of the “They” they’re talking about,” since you were both so great.

I saw your appearance posted on Kate Harding’s blog and you did such a great job, especially up against that horrible Roth woman.

And I agree with BigLiberty - size acceptance goes all ways. When I was younger I struggled with disordered eating and have lasting health problems because of it, despite the fact that I’ve always been small. These blogs mean a lot to me.
