You know, I came to this article expecting to see new research saying that weight gain was a dangerous new side effect of antiretroviral drugs, or that some other aspect of living with HIV was causing people to gain large amounts of weight. But no! People with HIV are the exactly the same range of sizes as the rest of the population! Big deal. It almost carries an implication of "oh, it used to be so terrible to get AIDS, but at least you got to be skinny"!

People with HIV are living longer, yay! Oh, wait. But they're fat.

Precisely Mander. That to me is the essence of this study. Instead of celebrating that they're leading longer, more fulfilling lives, we're lamenting the fact that they're overweight. I would think that someone with a limited life span would believe its quality of life over length of life.

Really, this is so hard to take in. Who the heck cares about 13 pounds? In an entire freaking decade? In someone who probably wouldn't even have lived that long if they had contracted AIDS 20 years ago?

What's the deal with covering up the good news (people with a serious disease are living longer, more healthy lives) with more hysterical crap?

Yeah. Like if you asked someone whose loved one had HIV, "Would you rather see your loved one develop AIDS and waste away and die in the next year, or would you rather they live another 10 years and gain 13 whole pounds?", they'd choose the first thing. Better dead than fat!
